Suzanne Sawko digitized the text and embroidery designs, then I stitched the little heirloom quilt. This joint effort was for a class we co-taught at a Brother dealer convention in Denver.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Ifappleswerepearscenter1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33080\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Ifappleswerepearscenter1.jpg\" alt=\"Ifappleswerepearscenter\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Ifappleswerepearscenter1.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/Ifappleswerepearscenter1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is to the credit of Suzanne\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s skill, perseverance and diligence that the floral designs look very much like hand embroidery. They are made all the more so by the use of Brother\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Country Threads with their matte finish. They look just like cotton but are, in fact, polyester.\u00c2\u00a0 However, the color palette is limited to 61 colors.\u00c2\u00a0 Still, it is my favorite as it offers the look of cotton with the durability of polyester.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Cotton is my favorite thread for most fine machine embroidery.\u00c2\u00a0 Play clothes for the grandchildren and utility items are exempt from this category.\u00c2\u00a0 It has taken a good bit of time to assemble an assortment of cotton threads,\u00c2\u00a0including 60\/2 Mettler (my favorite for outlining), 50\/2 DMC, 50\/3 Mettler Silk Finish (stitches just like 30\/2), 30\/2 Mettler and 12 wt. Cotty or Sulky.\u00c2\u00a0 If you are trying to replicate handwork, the cotton thread gives a lot of support to that illusion.<\/p>\n<p>Suzanne and I\u00c2\u00a0tried to incorporate a number of techniques without cluttering up the very small 14&#8243; x 15&#8243; area.\u00c2\u00a0 The<a title=\"Expo Inspiration+Free ME Yo-Yo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/31\/free-me-yo-yo-expo-inspiration\/\"> yo-yo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/a> are made on the embroidery machine and the tiny text was digitized with a running stitch, rather than satin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IfappleswerepearsURcorner1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33081\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IfappleswerepearsURcorner1.jpg\" alt=\"IfappleswerepearsURcorner\" width=\"518\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IfappleswerepearsURcorner1.jpg 518w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/IfappleswerepearsURcorner1-242x300.jpg 242w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also, this was the first of our whole cloth quilt projects in which the illusion of individual blocks is suggested by wing needle entredeux. It is stitched along what might have been a seam line. Several strands of embroidery floss were stabbed through the holes, quilting the piece with large but even stitches.<\/p>\n<p>From Brother embroidery cards, the quilting designs and appliqu\u00c3\u00a9d antique lace corners were stitched in the hoop. The quilting designs were worked in the same manner as the seam line, with a wing needle and quilted with floss.<\/p>\n<p>A classic Liberty of London tanna lawn was used for the binding, yo-yo&#8217;s and backing.\u00c2\u00a0 It also served as a source for the color palette.<\/p>\n<p>Suzanne and I met at a sewing event and have built a\u00c2\u00a0warm and\u00c2\u00a0lasting \u00c2\u00a0friendship over time. For 18 years now, we have\u00c2\u00a0 collaborated and consulted with one another about sewing projects, child rearing, garden layouts, cake decorating\u00c2\u00a0and grandchildren.
