{"id":7717,"date":"2010-06-24T21:25:11","date_gmt":"2010-06-25T01:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=7717"},"modified":"2013-01-17T01:36:03","modified_gmt":"2013-01-17T06:36:03","slug":"blue-flowers-daygown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/24\/blue-flowers-daygown\/","title":{"rendered":"Blue Flowers Daygown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/zblueflrdaygownwholeBrite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14418\" title=\"zblueflrdaygownwholeBrite\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/zblueflrdaygownwholeBrite.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"746\" height=\"1234\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/zblueflrdaygownwholeBrite.jpg 746w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/zblueflrdaygownwholeBrite-181x300.jpg 181w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/zblueflrdaygownwholeBrite-619x1024.jpg 619w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 746px) 100vw, 746px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Few projects are as satisfying as a baby daygown.\u00c2\u00a0 Even lavished with\u00c2\u00a0time consuming\u00c2\u00a0details and handwork, they are relatively quick.\u00c2\u00a0 You can use fine fabrics and\u00c2\u00a0short lengths of special\u00c2\u00a0trims from your stash\u00c2\u00a0that might be too small or too expensive for a larger garment.\u00c2\u00a0 And you can use things you have put away for something special and not feel guilty, because daygowns <em>are<\/em> special.<\/p>\n<p>This smocked daygown was made for Laurel, before her May birth.\u00c2\u00a0The angel wing sleeve seemed to be appropriate for the summer heat that would\u00c2\u00a0blanket her infancy.\u00c2\u00a0The fabric is easy care Imperial batiste,\u00c2\u00a0chosen because of the\u00c2\u00a0non-stop demands on a new mother&#8217;s time and the fact that\u00c2\u00a0my daughter-in-law\u00c2\u00a0hates to iron.<\/p>\n<p>The trim is a Swiss embroidery from Capitol Imports that I had put away many years ago.\u00c2\u00a0 The blue floral insertion was used on the front opening and the matching edge finishes the angel sleeve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownbodiceBrite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14419\" title=\"blueflrdaygownbodiceBrite\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownbodiceBrite.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1126\" height=\"876\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownbodiceBrite.jpg 1126w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownbodiceBrite-300x233.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownbodiceBrite-1024x796.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1126px) 100vw, 1126px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The edge is 1&#8243; wide, too wide, I decided, to be joined to either side of the insertion down the front.\u00c2\u00a0 It seemed\u00c2\u00a0as if \u00c2\u00a0that much width and that many blue flowers it would just overwhelm the smocking and the dress and the baby.\u00c2\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Since the insertion was bordered with entredeux, I\u00c2\u00a0trimmed away the &#8220;seam allowance, cutting\u00c2\u00a0in the ditch between the entredeux and the raw edge. Then\u00c2\u00a0with\u00c2\u00a0DMC perle cotton the same color as the DMC floss used in the smocking, I simply whipped it in and around the holes of the entredeux.<\/p>\n<p>This finish pleased me.\u00c2\u00a0 It is a neat way to add color without fuss and a good finish for other entredeux edged Swiss insertions.\u00c2\u00a0 I have several white on white insertions\u00c2\u00a0which would be very suitable or boys.\u00c2\u00a0 The\u00c2\u00a0option of adding color makes it very useful.<\/p>\n<p>The same perle cotton was woven through the entredeux which joined the edging to the sleeve.\u00c2\u00a0 NOTE:\u00c2\u00a0 You are wise to coordinate the perle cotton and floss before beginning to smock. A number of blues might work for the smocking, but the selection of perle cotton colors is more limited.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownback2Brite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14420\" title=\"blueflrdaygownback2Brite\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownback2Brite.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1263\" height=\"708\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownback2Brite.jpg 1263w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownback2Brite-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/blueflrdaygownback2Brite-1024x574.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1263px) 100vw, 1263px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before Laurel was born, her mother was convinced&#8211;or\u00c2\u00a0perhaps simply\u00c2\u00a0hopeful&#8211;that her daughter would be a tomboy just as she had been.\u00c2\u00a0 But truth be told, I have seen childhood pictures of Shelly and she was as feminine as any little girl you have ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, Shelly informed me in a very sensitive and polite\u00c2\u00a0manner that she was not a\u00c2\u00a0fan of \u00c2\u00a0lace or pink or frou-frou anything.\u00c2\u00a0 But, she assured me, she would\u00c2\u00a0be grateful for\u00c2\u00a0anything I made Laurel and guaranteed she would wear it.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, I thought, but she wouldn&#8217;t like it.<\/p>\n<p>So when I began sewing in earnest for my first grandchild, concessions were made on both sides.\u00c2\u00a0 Laurel&#8217;s <a title=\"Coming Home Daygown and Bonnet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2009\/09\/24\/coming-home-daygown-and-bonnet\/\">coming home outfit<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 was yellow instead of pink\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0and trimmed with blue ribbon and tatting not lace.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It was still very\u00c2\u00a0girly, but not exactly\u00c2\u00a0this Nana&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Heirloom Dream Dress come true.<em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0Shelly\u00c2\u00a0 genuinely liked that set\u00c2\u00a0 and appreciated the <a title=\"Daygown Challenge\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/01\/13\/daygown-challenge\/\">daygown smocked<\/a> with a squirrel and trimmed in tan microcheck .
