It is really a stronger color than it seems to be on this computer. It is available for $8 py&#8230;.vintage Swiss organdy, 36&#8243; wide.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After \u00c2\u00a0finally deciding on a newborn horseshoe bonnet (so named for the shape of the back crown), I realized that there was not enough lace for the crown lining, a necessary component to cover the gathered back edge of the bonnet.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, like a fine wine, the vintage mint green Swiss organdy (available\u00c2\u00a0 at the Janice Ferguson Sews &#8220;store&#8221;) had been aging in the sewing room armoire,\u00c2\u00a0in the same era as the\u00c2\u00a0lace.\u00c2\u00a0 I took it as a sign.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Lining the bonnet with a colored fabric would show off the lovely pattern of the lace while also making up for my short yardage.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/emb-lace-bonnet-backxx.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34844\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/emb-lace-bonnet-backxx.jpg\" alt=\"emb lace bonnet backxx\" width=\"640\" height=\"617\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/emb-lace-bonnet-backxx.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/emb-lace-bonnet-backxx-300x289.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As I played with the lace and the organdy, I thought perhaps I could do some very basic silk ribbon embroidery over the pattern of the lace, to highlight, to\u00c2\u00a0 give dimension and to add color.\u00c2\u00a0 Having done the silk ribbon work and constructed the bonnet top, I cut the lining from the organdy and slipped the two pieces together.<\/p>\n<p>Then it occurred to me that the organdy\u00c2\u00a0lining would have to be secured to the lace bonnet somehow.\u00c2\u00a0 I worked a pin stitch along the folded front edge of the organdy, with the &#8220;reach&#8221; stitching &#8220;in the air.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/emb-lace-bonnet-lining-xx.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34845\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/emb-lace-bonnet-lining-xx.jpg\" alt=\"emb lace bonnet lining xx\" width=\"433\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/emb-lace-bonnet-lining-xx.jpg 433w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/emb-lace-bonnet-lining-xx-203x300.jpg 203w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The two pieces were\u00c2\u00a0machine stitched\u00c2\u00a0together along the bottom edge\u00c2\u00a0and hand basted along the front.\u00c2\u00a0 The final touch was securing the lining to the lace with French\u00c2\u00a0knots .\u00c2\u00a0 These were worked through the hemstitch holes, making even placement very easy.<\/p>\n<p>Having hand embroidery serve a functional purpose was very satisfying.<\/p>\n<p>The ties are from one of several spools of antique silk grosgrain ribbon I have hoarded for some time.<\/p>\n<p>The stitching that secures them to the bonnet is covered by silk ribbon embroidery like that on the bonnet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m pretty pleased with this chapeau.\u00c2\u00a0 Now all I need is a granddaughter!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
