Four smaller triangles create the &#8220;snowball.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 The perimeter of the flannel snowball\u00c2\u00a0 is pinstitched, with the holes from the wing needle in the flannel and the &#8220;reach&#8221; stitch in the gingham.\u00c2\u00a0 The perimeter of the square gingham frame is also pinstitched.<\/p>\n<p>DOG\/CAT EMBROIDERY:\u00c2\u00a0 All the text files were stitched, including the poem itself as well as the &#8220;bow-wow&#8221; and &#8220;meow&#8221; text.\u00c2\u00a0 The gingham dog and calico cat was a design from <em>Dakota Collectibles<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Suzanne arranged the text in an arc or wave over the dueling pets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcornerlow1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13728\" title=\"ginghamquiltcornerlow\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcornerlow1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcornerlow1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcornerlow1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcornerlow1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an effort to\u00c2\u00a0 reduce the stiffness of the\u00c2\u00a0 design, the white portion of the gingham dog design was omitted, allowing the white flannel to do the job.\u00c2\u00a0 The design was often mirrored for variety.\u00c2\u00a0 The shades of blue and yellow 50 wt. DMC machine embroidery thread\u00c2\u00a0were varied for the same reason, to create \u00c2\u00a0interest and variety.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Baltimore Album applique&#8217; quilt designs were taken from Brother&#8217;s <em>Quilting Card #22<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Liberty of London tanna lawn was used for the yellow print, along with the pima gingham and some solid green pima.\u00c2\u00a0 The technique used on this card seems to have fallen out of favor, but its execution was interesting.\u00c2\u00a0 The card comes with\u00c2\u00a0templates, of the same plastic material used for other quilting templates.\u00c2\u00a0 The quilter is instructed to trace inside the shapes and carefully cut them out.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0After the quilt top is hooped, \u00c2\u00a0the design stitches out placement lines within which the quilter is to place\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0cut out pieces.\u00c2\u00a0 Then an applique&#8217; stitch secures works the pieces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquilttitleBrite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13729\" title=\"ginghamquilttitleBrite\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquilttitleBrite-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquilttitleBrite-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquilttitleBrite-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquilttitleBrite.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As I was doing a &#8220;rehearsal&#8221; of fabrics and patterns, I realized that with very little abrasion,\u00c2\u00a0even the\u00c2\u00a0tightly woven Liberty and pima were fraying a bit.\u00c2\u00a0 So on the quilt top itself, I carefully dabbed Fray Chek along the edges of each piece and left them to dry before placing them (with a glue stick) in readiness for the applique&#8217; stitch.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: When using the template sheets provided with the Brother quilting card, remember that lines are draw INSIDE the template. Be sure to cut just outside the line when cutting the fabric shape. Otherwise the shape will be too small, leaving a gap between the buttonhole applique&#8217; stitches and the fabric.<\/p>\n<p>FLOSS WEAVING:\u00c2\u00a0 With a 12&#8243; length of 6 strand embroidery floss threaded into a #26 tapestry needle, the floss was woven loosely through the entredeux and pinstitch holes.\u00c2\u00a0 It was knotted off loosely toward the back at each intersection, keeping in mind that a calico (Liberty) yo-yo would cover each intersection.\u00c2\u00a0 Puckering resulted when I used longer lengths of floss.<\/p>\n<p>I had every intention of quilting through all layers of the quilt, so the blue floss quilting stitches would show on the back of the quilt.\u00c2\u00a0 But in order to achieve any regularity of stitch length at all required a stab stitch, one at a time.\u00c2\u00a0 It just took too long.\u00c2\u00a0 So the blue stitches show only on the front.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltfeather1brite.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-13730\" title=\"ginghamquiltfeather1brite\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltfeather1brite-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltfeather1brite-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltfeather1brite-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltfeather1brite.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>QUILTING:\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0A second 55&#8243; square of batting covered the first, making the back all embroidery invisible.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Next, the\u00c2\u00a0backing of Swiss flannel \u00c2\u00a0was spread evenly over the quilt top with batting and the second layer of batting.\u00c2\u00a0 So at this point, the &#8220;sandwich&#8221; consisted of the Swiss flannel quilt top, the two layers of Request batting, and finally another piece of Swiss flannel.\u00c2\u00a0 It was hand basted extensively.<\/p>\n<p>With\u00c2\u00a0the walking foot, a straight stitch was worked immediately beside the floss around the outside of the gingham square.\u00c2\u00a0 This stitching was repeated next to the floss inside the gingham square and along all rows of entredeux and pinstitch.<\/p>\n<p>The quilt was hooped with no additional stabilizer to stitch the\u00c2\u00a0feather designs as shown.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The design was rotated as necessary to match the pattern.<\/p>\n<p>I worked on this quilt at our cabin in the mountains of North Carolina, between Boone and Banner Elk, and thought I had brought along everything I needed.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Because the design stitches three times in an irregular pattern, I wanted to lighten the look by using 80 wt. thread.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 But I had left my blue 80 wt. Madeira Cotona behind, the thread I would have used for the quilting.\u00c2\u00a0 At that time, there was virtually nothing available in the area but quilting thread and general sewing thread.\u00c2\u00a0 So I had to be satisfied with the yellow Madeira Cotona, something I have always regretted.\u00c2\u00a0 I wish I had used the blue 50 wt.
