{"id":8215,"date":"2010-07-16T22:20:33","date_gmt":"2010-07-17T02:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=8215"},"modified":"2018-05-01T23:29:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-02T03:29:00","slug":"gingham-dog-iii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/16\/gingham-dog-iii\/","title":{"rendered":"Gingham Dog Quilt Part III"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_8230\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcorner1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8230\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-8230\" title=\"ginghamquiltcorner\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcorner1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcorner1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcorner1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltcorner1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Note two sizes of yo-yo&#8217;s.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">YO-YO&#8217;S:\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0This was really fun.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 Suzanne Sawko has always been charmed by yo-yo&#8217;s and made a vest of Liberty yo-yo&#8217;s for an article in <em>Creative Needle<\/em> magazine.\u00c2\u00a0 But she did it the fast and easy way.\u00c2\u00a0 She created a machine embroidery design that does the most tedious part of yo-yo construction, turning under the raw edge, most of it bias.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;ve always kept that technique in mind&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p>After completing the floss weaving through the entredeux and pinstitch on this quilt, it needed something.\u00c2\u00a0 There was a bit of congestion at the entredeux intersections and it just lacked&#8230;&#8230;dimension.\u00c2\u00a0 That was my objection to the design.\u00c2\u00a0 It lacked dimension.\u00c2\u00a0 So I decided to make yo-yo&#8217;s with Suzanne&#8217;s machine embroidery file.\u00c2\u00a0 The technique is so simple, so obvious, so neat. And it could be done without an embroidery machine.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltyoyodesign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8234\" title=\"ginghamquiltyoyodesign\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltyoyodesign-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltyoyodesign-222x300.jpg 222w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltyoyodesign-759x1024.jpg 759w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltyoyodesign.jpg 1103w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Liberty and regular, original weight Solvy (or other water soluble stabilizer) was hooped together, with the Liberty right side facing up, covered with Solvy.\u00c2\u00a0 Then\u00c2\u00a06 circles were straight stitched, at least 1\/2&#8243; apart, the smaller size in the 5 x 7 hoop (130mm x 180mm) and the larger size in the \u00c2\u00a0160mm x 260mm hoop.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0After the stitching was complete, the Liberty and Solvy were removed from the hoop and cut out, 1\/4&#8243; away from the stitching line.\u00c2\u00a0 A slit\u00c2\u00a0was made in the\u00c2\u00a0Solvy and the circle turned, like a pillow top.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Using a point turner, the outline\u00c2\u00a0was smoothed and\u00c2\u00a0 then the circle\u00c2\u00a0was pressed.\u00c2\u00a0The result is a perfectly turned class=\"wp-caption-text\">yo-yo construction<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Next, I \u00c2\u00a0simply ran a running stitch (no smaller than 1\/8&#8243;\u00c2\u00a0long) around the perimeter of the circle.\u00c2\u00a0 Then, with the turned edge securely held in place with those stitches, the\u00c2\u00a0water soluble stabilizer was cut away, the\u00c2\u00a0running stitch\u00c2\u00a0drawn up and knotted.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Voila&#8217;!\u00c2\u00a0 A perfect yo-yo.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with sewing software can create such a design file, \u00c2\u00a0but for those who are interested, two design files will be sent upon request.\u00c2\u00a0 The larger file\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0creates yo-yo&#8217;s the size of a quarter, the other yo-yo&#8217;s are the size of a dime.\u00c2\u00a0For those without hoop embroidery capability, the circles could simply be drawn on the fabric and stitched free motion.\u00c2\u00a0 The finishing and result would be just the same.<\/p>\n<p>If you look carefully at the quilt top, you will see that on either corner of the smaller triangle\u00c2\u00a0 that creates the snowball,\u00c2\u00a0the smaller yo-yo is used.\u00c2\u00a0 At each intersection, a yo-yo was stitched in place, free motion, covering the congestion and adding an element of dimension.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltruffle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8238\" title=\"ginghamquiltruffle\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltruffle-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltruffle-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltruffle-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/ginghamquiltruffle.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>BINDING:\u00c2\u00a0 Swiss flannel strips were cut for binding.\u00c2\u00a0 Bias was cut from the blue gingham pima cotton and used to\u00c2\u00a0make\u00c2\u00a0 piping.\u00c2\u00a0 More gingham was cut\u00c2\u00a0on\u00c2\u00a0 the straight of grain\u00c2\u00a0for the ruffle.\u00c2\u00a0 The quilt corners were rounded.<\/p>\n<p>The edges were\u00c2\u00a0bound with a gingham ruffle extending behind a\u00c2\u00a0lovely piece of linen Swiss embroidered edging from Bear Threads.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37851\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>LABEL:\u00c2\u00a0 The label was machine embroidered, bordered with the Swiss embroidery and hand stitched to the back of the quilt.<\/p>\n<p>This has been one very long project post.\u00c2\u00a0 Kudos to those who plowed through.\u00c2\u00a0 I hope you discovered a new technique or two in all\u00c2\u00a0 this
