grandchild&#8217;s nursery is pure joy.\u00c2\u00a0 When Sue Box&#8217;s embroidery design collection,<em> Woodland Treasures<\/em>, was released, I ordered it almost immediately.\u00c2\u00a0 I knew these designs\u00c2\u00a0would be just what my daughter-in-law would want for her baby.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-31704\" overwhelming interest in nature and her environmental science\u00c2\u00a0degree, was months away from delivering our first grandchild, I was on a New Grannie High.\u00c2\u00a0 I began major projects with new enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zwoodlandtreasureslaundry.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full center;\">\n<p>Shelly had also\u00c2\u00a0volunteered as\u00c2\u00a0a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for years before her pregnancy.\u00c2\u00a0 She spent countless hours preparing\u00c2\u00a0 Mother Nature&#8217;s orphans for independent\u00c2\u00a0life in\u00c2\u00a0Florida&#8217;s woodlands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandtreasuresewing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-31706\" center;\">\n<p>Shelly\u00c2\u00a0agreed that these fantasy woodland creatures\u00c2\u00a0were perfect\u00c2\u00a0nursery companions\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0for her baby.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasures123.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" center;\">\n<p>Soon, I was embroidering hedgehogs, squirrels, bunnies, beavers, mice\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0raccoons on the bumper pads, which turned out to be one of the most time consuming projects I had done in a long while.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandtreasuresunflower.jpg\"><img center;\">\n<p>With a variety of fabrics in the chosen color palette of red, green and yellow, the pads included a scene at either end and individual character embroidery alternating with sunflowers\u00c2\u00a0on the sides.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresfishside.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-31709\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresfishside.jpg\" designs and fabrics were separated accented with red rick rack.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresmailmanside.jpg\"><img ticking stripe bordered the embroidered squares and a plaid ruffle, finished with woolly nylon,\u00c2\u00a0softened the edges.<\/p>\n<p>My biggest challenge for this project was finding a way to create a scene for the head and foot boards.\u00c2\u00a0 As I fiddled with printed design templates, these sweet figures and landscape elements just looked &#8220;plunked&#8221; in place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zwoodlandtreasuresfishpole.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-31711\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zwoodlandtreasuresfishpole.jpg\" alt=\"zwoodlandtreasuresfishpole\" width=\"800\" height=\"486\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zwoodlandtreasuresfishpole.jpg 800w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zwoodlandtreasuresfishpole-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, I decided that a path would connect the different features and create some unity to the scene.\u00c2\u00a0 With a blue washaway marker, I\u00c2\u00a0sketched a rough outline of the stone walkway on the fabric.<\/p>\n<p>Then pieces of\u00c2\u00a0ultrasuede were cut and placed, just as a real stone path would be made.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Held in place with a glue stick, the ultrasuede &#8220;stones&#8221; were stitched over and over in a stippling pattern with black thread, using free motion technique.\u00c2\u00a0 The effect, to me, was that of gravel and stone.\u00c2\u00a0 I was satisfied that many embroideries now had some visual stability and were not just floating.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31712\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-31712\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">S<\/p>\n<p>hortly after this photo was taken and long before the baby arrived, the bumper pads were installed and neckroll pillows were covered with the red plaid. Nestled into each side of the window seat, the circular ends of the neckroll pillows were embroidered with the same sunflower as on the bumper pads.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>As soon as it was determined that our grandchild was a girl, Shelly began readying the nursery.\u00c2\u00a0 Ryan painted the walls and they had a local artist come in to paint a woodland environment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresNurserysunflowers1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-31716\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresNurserysunflowers1.jpg\" alt=\"Sierra Exif JPEG\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresNurserysunflowers1.jpg 480w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresNurserysunflowers1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>In one corner,\u00c2\u00a0a towering tree sheltered a squirrel.\u00c2\u00a0 On the opposite corner, huge sunflowers swayed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresnurseryplanetree.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-31718\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresnurseryplanetree.jpg\" alt=\"zWoodlandTreasuresnurseryplanetree\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresnurseryplanetree.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/zWoodlandTreasuresnurseryplanetree-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>Our son is a pilot as well as a certified flight instructor for both &#8220;fixed wing&#8221; (that&#8217;s what they call airplanes now) and helicopters.\u00c2\u00a0 The artist even included\u00c2\u00a0a rendering of Ryan&#8217;s own Twin Comanche\u00c2\u00a0 pulling a banner with Laurel&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Other items were added, including a dust ruffle in the same decorator fabric plaid as was used for the window valance and the window seat cushion.\u00c2\u00a0 Bunches of sunflowers were tied at each corner of the crib, at mattress level.<\/p>\n<p>Time and time again, I have wondered why I did not take pictures of these early baby projects.\u00c2\u00a0 I was just reminded that shortly after Laurel&#8217;s birth, our home was severely damaged by Hurricane Charley.\u00c2\u00a0 That awful 2004 hurricane season brought three storms to central Florida, Charley, Frances and Jean, each of which\u00c2\u00a0damaged us in one way or another.\u00c2\u00a0 Our repairs, including the roof, were not completed until July, 2006.\u00c2\u00a0 So that is why so many photo opportunities were missed.\u00c2\u00a0 Living with swarms of workmen and a tarp over one end of the house for almost two years, I had other things on my mind.\u00c2\u00a0 Having forgotten some of that inconvenience and aggravation is a blessing.<\/p>\n<p>From her earliest collection, Sue Box has been one of my favorite embroidery designers.\u00c2\u00a0 Every design is spectacular, with flawless digitizing and charming detail.\u00c2\u00a0 I have\u00c2\u00a0 a huge embroidery design library, many unused.\u00c2\u00a0 But I suspect the designs from Sue Box have been stitched more than any others.<\/p>\n<p>If you have not used or checked out her designs, I would encourage you to do so at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suebox.com\">www.suebox.com<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 I have never met her and have no connection, other than a mutual love of sewing and machine embroidery.<\/p>\n<p>Happy sewing to each of you!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sewing for a grandchild&#8217;s nursery is pure joy.\u00c2\u00a0 When Sue Box&#8217;s embroidery design collection, Woodland Treasures, was released, I ordered it almost immediately.\u00c2\u00a0 I knew these designs\u00c2\u00a0would be just what my daughter-in-law would want for her baby.
