our cabin on Seven Devils Mountain in Banner Elk, NC<\/p><\/div>\n

Bob and I are\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0at our mountain cabin in North Carolina, enjoying the cool air and relaxing a little.\u00c2\u00a0 I love this place, located between Boone and Banner Elk, in what is known as The High Country.\u00c2\u00a0The cabin is at 4500′ elevation, above the summer tourist bustle\u00c2\u00a0and the heat.<\/p>\n

All afternoon I sat here, smocking and sipping sweet tea.<\/p><\/div>\n

But there is always work to be done when we are here so we’ve done a little of that as well.\u00c2\u00a0And there is more to come.<\/p>\n

This afternoon, I sat on the front deck and started on the ready-to-smock Jon-Jon for Alastair.\u00c2\u00a0 The combination of needlework and the tranquil setting left me feeling peaceful and serene.\u00c2\u00a0Bob was banging around replacing molding, cleaning out\u00c2\u00a0gutters\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0and hauling long-since\u00c2\u00a0forgotten storage bins from the utility rooms below the deck.\u00c2\u00a0 Even his noise seemed domestic and comforting.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n

The smocking plate, Farmlands <\/em>by Ellen McCarn, is one I’ve used several times and\u00c2\u00a0have always liked.\u00c2\u00a0 I love the look of picture smocking, but\u00c2\u00a0have never enjoyed\u00c2\u00a0the process itself.\u00c2\u00a0 But for children, it’s almost always about picture smocking.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00c2\u00a0especially dislike stitching large areas of stacked cables.\u00c2\u00a0 So this\u00c2\u00a0country scene with minimal stacking has always appealed to me.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Farmlands<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0 stitches up pretty quickly, so unless I take on more chores around the cabin, I’ll probably finish this as well as the two daygowns I’ve brought along.\u00c2\u00a0 If I run out of smocking, I may be forced to clean out the owner’s closet or reorganize the pots and pans cupboard.<\/p>\n

Ouch!\u00c2\u00a0 On second thought, I think I will smock slowly and carefully and take my time watching the chipmunks scamper below the front deck.\u00c2\u00a0 And continue to enjoy the cool peace and quiet.<\/p>\n
