but neither Laurel nor I mind.<\/p>\n<iframe width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lCtrcAp3TEY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>I had to drop the hem, as little girls&#8217; skirts are longer now.\u00c2\u00a0Fortunately, when the dress was made, I followed the standard recommendation of putting in a 6&#8243; hem so\u00c2\u00a0 I had a good 3&#8243; to drop.<\/p>\n<p>This basic yoke has\u00c2\u00a0a sash that ties in the back.\u00c2\u00a0 It is smocked to just above the waist and meets\u00c2\u00a0the back yoke\u00c2\u00a0at that same depth.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The sash snugs the dress up and feels more like a big girl dress.<\/p>\n<p>The intriguing smocking plate is <em>Chinese Chippendale<\/em> by Barbie Beck, an almost ancient design.\u00c2\u00a0 If you blow up the photo, you will see how interesting the design is.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The rose print fabric is \u00c2\u00a0a Rose and Hubble lawn, which was less than half the cost and 3\/4 \u00c2\u00a0as nice as Liberty of London tanna lawn.\u00c2\u00a0I haven&#8217;t seen any Rose and Hubble in quality fabric stores for years and was told\u00c2\u00a0it is no longer available, but an on-line search did turn up a good selection, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sewingbasketinc.com\/servlet\/the-Fabric-cln-Rose-and-Hubble\/Categories\" target=\"_blank\">Sewing Basket Inc.<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 has a nice selection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Second-hand-rose-collarsmile.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30682\" alt=\"Second hand rose collarsmile\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Second-hand-rose-collarsmile.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Second-hand-rose-collarsmile.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Second-hand-rose-collarsmile-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Between the yoke and smocked skirt is self-piping.\u00c2\u00a0 The sleeves and neckline are edged with Binche heirloom lace.\u00c2\u00a0 The parchment color\u00c2\u00a0 brightens the dress.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be studying some Aesop&#8217;s fables this year, so I&#8217;ll be sure she\u00c2\u00a0reads <em>The Fox and the Crow<\/em> and takes a good look at the lace on her dress.<\/p>\n<p>The sleeves are gathered up with a technique Mildred Turner featured one of her books.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have all three, I would highly\u00c2\u00a0 recommend you hunt them down for your sewing reference library.\u00c2\u00a0 They are invaluable and out of print for many years now.\u00c2\u00a0 Mildred\u00c2\u00a0has fabulous sleeve ideas and this one seemed perfect for the dress.\u00c2\u00a0 Basically, a 5 mm zig zag is worked inside the sleeve\u00c2\u00a0over stretched 1\/8&#8243; elastic, with the thread in a color that blends into the fabric.<\/p>\n<p>First, the elastic is marked at the correct length, i.e. 6&#8243;, but not cut.\u00c2\u00a0 Then it is secured in the sleeve seam allowance with a few straight stitches, pulled up between the toes of the presser foot and pulled taught.\u00c2\u00a0 This narrows the width of the elastic and makes it less likely that it will be caught in the zig zag stitches.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Lawn-Binche-sleeve.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-30683\" alt=\"Lawn Binche sleeve\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Lawn-Binche-sleeve.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Lawn-Binche-sleeve.jpg 600w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Lawn-Binche-sleeve-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When the zig zag reaches the edge of the sleeve, the elastic is pulled up to the mark.\u00c2\u00a0 Straight stitching through the elastic and fabric hold it in place.\u00c2\u00a0 Finally, the elastic is cut.<\/p>\n<p>Ribbon is secured\u00c2\u00a0at the underarm seam and threaded through bullion knot ribbon carriers.\u00c2\u00a0 I used rose\u00c2\u00a0floss for the bullions\u00c2\u00a0to contrast with the navy ribbon.<\/p>\n<p>I want so much to make more clothes for Laurel, but homeschooling takes a big bite out of my time.\u00c2\u00a0 At least with Rebecca&#8217;s hand-me-downs, I can enjoy\u00c2\u00a0dressing her in things I have made.\u00c2\u00a0 These retired dresses have been like money in the bank.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
