{"id":9074,"date":"2010-09-28T23:06:30","date_gmt":"2010-09-29T03:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=9074"},"modified":"2015-02-27T14:48:40","modified_gmt":"2015-02-27T19:48:40","slug":"grid-quilt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/28\/grid-quilt\/","title":{"rendered":"Grid Quilt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/gridqt2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9075\" title=\"gridqt2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/gridqt2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"437\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/gridqt2.jpg 437w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/gridqt2-300x256.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Recently, there was a post entitled <a title=\"Flannel Board Quilting\" href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/16\/flannel-board-quilting\/\">Flannel Board Quilting<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 This quilt a variation of that technique which I so enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>The technique of what I call flannel board quilting requires a solid fabric (a wholecloth quilt top) with a carefully measured grid for placement of raw edged pieces.\u00c2\u00a0 These are then stitched in place and the raw edges covered with decorative stitching.\u00c2\u00a0 It is a simple, almost primitive technique, though there is nothing primitive about this quilt.\u00c2\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/gridquiltcloseP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9078\" title=\"gridquiltcloseP\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/gridquiltcloseP.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"493\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/gridquiltcloseP.jpg 493w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/gridquiltcloseP-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rather than a grid drawn\u00c2\u00a0with washaway marker, the foundation of this quilt is a flannel with a printed 2&#8243; grid.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Using the classic snowball pattern, the floral pieces were cut from a silky lawn and the green squares are of pima cotton.<\/p>\n<p>The grid and raw edges of the pieces are covered with decorative stitching, at least 5mm wide and preferrably a little wider.\u00c2\u00a0 If the pieces have been cut on grain and heavily starched before pressing, it is almost impossible for any ravelling to occur.<\/p>\n<p>Machine embroidery is centered in each &#8220;snowball&#8221; and adds yet another texture to the potpourri of flannel, lawn and pima.<\/p>\n<p>These photos are scans of pictures from the <em>Creative Needle<\/em> article I wrote some time ago.\u00c2\u00a0 Unfortunately, this quilt was badly damaged in a hurricane and I can get no better images.\u00c2\u00a0 But I hope the combination of pictures and easy\u00c2\u00a0technique might inspire you to try a quilt using this method.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, there was a post entitled Flannel Board Quilting.\u00c2\u00a0 This quilt a variation of that technique which I so enjoy.
