A\u00c2\u00a0hideaway hanger is a fabulous travel accessory.\u00c2\u00a0 With a zippered pocket\u00c2\u00a0concealed beneath the scallops, it provides a secure place to hide jewelry and other valuables when you are staying in a hotel.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ll never forget when a teacher at a huge sewing school had all of her jewelry stolen while she was in class.\u00c2\u00a0 A hanger like this might have prevented that heart wrenching\u00c2\u00a0theft.<\/p>\n

This classic heirloom style\u00c2\u00a0hanger is packed in my suitcase every time I go out of town, a lovely and useful gift from my dear friend Barbara\u00c2\u00a0Chatelaine of Baton Rouge.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0It was stitched on her beloved Pfaff 7570.\u00c2\u00a0 Barbara is an incredibly talented sewist,\u00c2\u00a0a fabulous cook–her shrimp etouffee is legendary–and altogether a\u00c2\u00a0delightful and charming Cajun lady.<\/p>\n

She\u00c2\u00a0declares this\u00c2\u00a0to be\u00c2\u00a0an easy project.\u00c2\u00a0 By simply tracing the outline of a wooden hanger, a pattern can be drawn.\u00c2\u00a0 Add a seam allowance and trace the shape onto fabric which has been pressed onto an iron-on low loft bonded batt.\u00c2\u00a0 The batting gives the cover body as well as \u00c2\u00a0cushions and\u00c2\u00a0disguises the contents of the hanger.\u00c2\u00a0 Before cutting it out, embroider a monogram or other design.\u00c2\u00a0 Or just leave it plain.<\/p>\n

The zipper is attached to two strips of fabric then stitched to the wrong side of the front and back\u00c2\u00a0 hanger pieces.\u00c2\u00a0 The seamline is covered with a strip of fabric top stitched in place.\u00c2\u00a0 Finally, the front and back are seamed together, leaving a small unstitched area for the hanger hook.<\/p>\n

Barbara shared a valuable\u00c2\u00a0 tip with me.\u00c2\u00a0 I’ve never cared for scalloped edges, as I can never get a clean cut and would rather\u00c2\u00a0have a root canal than live with\u00c2\u00a0those little eyelashed poking out.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0They always seem a little raggedy to me.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Barbara\u00c2\u00a0works a decorative scallop, trims close to the stitching and then works her magic.<\/p>\n

Against that cut edge, she butts a cord of some sort in the same color as the scallop thread.\u00c2\u00a0 This might be gimp, perle cotton, buttonhole twist or even several strands of the same sewing thread twisted together.\u00c2\u00a0 This cord is carefully guided while she stitches a narrow, tight zig zag over the cord and into the already trimmed scallop.\u00c2\u00a0 The result is a clean-as-a-whistle scalloped edge!<\/p>\n
