This 2-piece suit is quintessential heirloom for boys, with knee length Viyella pants and a buttoned on\u00c2\u00a0ivory linen shirt.\u00c2\u00a0 Sadly, Viyella is no longer available.\u00c2\u00a0 The wool blend is as fine and soft as Swiss flannel, but warmer with a similar hand.<\/p>\n<p>My shortcomings as a photographer\u00c2\u00a0are obvious here, as I managed to cut off the neat little cuff at the bottom of the knee length pants.\u00c2\u00a0 The suit is also crooked on the hanger.\u00c2\u00a0 But after trying to find a flat spot to hang the suit on the 12&#8243; deep Confederate jasmine that climbs up a palm tree, I neglected to straighten the suit on the hanger.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickershirtfrontBrite2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33104\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickershirtfrontBrite2.jpg\" alt=\"knickershirtfrontBrite\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickershirtfrontBrite2.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickershirtfrontBrite2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Linen is a joy to sew.\u00c2\u00a0 Every heirloom technique works wonderfully well on this natural fabric.\u00c2\u00a0 The front features hemstitching, tucks and inserted lace tape.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Actually, the lace tape is simply applied to the linen without cutting away behind it.\u00c2\u00a0 Then it was pin stitched in place.\u00c2\u00a0 Not apparent in the photo is the soft gray color of the lace tape.\u00c2\u00a0 In retrospect, black would have been a better choice.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny piping on the collar is gimp wrapped with gray lace tape.\u00c2\u00a0 This product has a unique advantage when tiny piping is needed.\u00c2\u00a0 Lace tape is so sheer and soft that it adds hardly any bulk at all to the piping filler.\u00c2\u00a0 Again, the black lace tape would have given a much more pleasing contrast.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickerbackBrite1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33105\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickerbackBrite1.jpg\" alt=\"knickerbackBrite\" width=\"633\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickerbackBrite1.jpg 633w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickerbackBrite1-296x300.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Note how clear and open the wing needle hemstitching holes are.\u00c2\u00a0 Either side of the back opening has been hemstitched, giving some interest and detail to the side viewed longest on little boys.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickersleeveBrite1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33106\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickersleeveBrite1.jpg\" alt=\"knickersleeveBrite\" width=\"459\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickersleeveBrite1.jpg 459w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/knickersleeveBrite1-215x300.jpg 215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 459px) 100vw, 459px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The tucks are crisp and raised.\u00c2\u00a0The pattern of vertical tucks and lace tape is repeated on the sleeves,\u00c2\u00a0while\u00c2\u00a0the cuff sports horizontal tucks.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I prefer to use\u00c2\u00a0linen for older children, as\u00c2\u00a0this fabric\u00c2\u00a0seems stiff to me, especially after being starched.\u00c2\u00a0 But whatever the project, linen is wonderful for heirloom sewing techniques.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I&#8217;m really on a roll with classic children&#8217;s clothing.
