{"id":9506,"date":"2010-10-26T00:36:19","date_gmt":"2010-10-26T04:36:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/?p=9506"},"modified":"2012-04-13T18:18:38","modified_gmt":"2012-04-13T22:18:38","slug":"thanksgiving-suit-in-progress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/26\/thanksgiving-suit-in-progress\/","title":{"rendered":"Thanksgiving Suit in Progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/ThanksgivingJohn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9507\" title=\"ThanksgivingJohnWIP\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/ThanksgivingJohn-655x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"781\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/ThanksgivingJohn-655x1024.jpg 655w, http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/ThanksgivingJohn.jpg 757w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.\u00c2\u00a0 We have so much to be thankful for and our precious grandchildren are near the top of the list.\u00c2\u00a0 My passion for sewing is another blessing that enriches my life.\u00c2\u00a0 Grandchildren and sewing are major\u00c2\u00a0factors of\u00c2\u00a0my happiness that go hand in hand.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I love making holiday garments for them.\u00c2\u00a0 This\u00c2\u00a0little suit is a work in progress for 19 month old Alastair to wear\u00c2\u00a0Thanksgiving Day when we all gather for thanks and dinner at\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0the home of his paternal grandmother.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course, he is the apple of everyone&#8217;s eye\u00c2\u00a0and will get more attention than the turkey and pumpkin pies.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, I have chosen one of my favorite patterns, the John-John included in the Martha Pullen book, <em>Applique&#8217;, Martha&#8217;s Favorites<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I use this so often that I have traced off all sizes of both the John-John and the girl&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0jumper.\u00c2\u00a0 Each pattern is kept\u00c2\u00a0 paper clipped together and stored in an envelope tucked into the book.\u00c2\u00a0 It probably took less\u00c2\u00a0time to trace off all sizes at one time than it would have taken to assemble the newsprint paper, ruler, marker, etc.,\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 haul it to the glass topped table on the breakfast porch\u00c2\u00a0and\u00c2\u00a0trace off\u00c2\u00a0 even two patterns.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/zThanksgivingsuitinprogressturkey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10009\" title=\"zThanksgivingsuitinprogressturkey\" src=\"http:\/\/www.janicefergusonsews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/zThanksgivingsuitinprogressturkey.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"478\" height=\"521\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the help of an\u00c2\u00a0edge stitch foot, a black straight stitch has been worked around the perimeter, top and bottom.\u00c2\u00a0 This keeps the white lining from peeking around the black houndstooth check body of the suit.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than embroider on the suit itself, I made a patch that will button onto the front of the John-John.\u00c2\u00a0 The turkey is from Designs by JuJu&#8217;s <em>Autumn Harvest<\/em> collection.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The inclusion of other fabrics, their colors and patterns really appeals to me.\u00c2\u00a0To my eye, the\u00c2\u00a0colors and patterns of the prints in the fanned tail is more interesting than solid colored stitching would have been.\u00c2\u00a0Another feature of applique&#8217; that I appreciate is the softer texture.\u00c2\u00a0 Fabric is softer than dense stitching.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the turkey, the patch includes &#8220;dirt&#8221; and two pumpkins from Amazing Designs Fall collection.\u00c2\u00a0 I like to combine designs to create a scene rather than suspending the turkey with nothing to stand on.<\/p>\n<p>The turkey scene is embroidered on a piece of white twill and framed with black piping.\u00c2\u00a0 Later, this patch can be replaced with a Mickey Mouse or Christmas or non-holiday design.<\/p>\n<p>The suit just needs buttons and buttonholes at the shoulder, crotch and center front for the patch.\u00c2\u00a0 The John-John pattern does not include the buttons at the crotch, but it is an easy feature to add.\u00c2\u00a0 By simply sewing an extension to the front and back,\u00c2\u00a0stitching \u00c2\u00a0buttonholes to the front piece and buttons to the back, the suit is diaper friendly.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m looking forward to finishing this and planning other button-on\u00c2\u00a0patches.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.\u00c2\u00a0 We have so much to be thankful for and our precious grandchildren are near the top of the list.\u00c2\u00a0 My passion for sewing is another blessing that enriches my life.\u00c2\u00a0 Grandchildren and sewing &hellip;
