Once again, we’ve been invited to share Thanksgiving dinner with our daughter’s in-laws.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Alastair’s\u00c2\u00a0paternal grandmother, “Oma,” will host a huge gathering of family at her beautiful country home.\u00c2\u00a0 Seated\u00c2\u00a0at the table, amidst 20 month-old baby Alastair and 89 year-old Great Grandmother Ruby, will be teenage cousins, young marrieds, middle-aged aunts, uncles and four\u00c2\u00a0reluctantly “senior” grandparents. \u00c2\u00a0The dinner\u00c2\u00a0 table will look like a Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post<\/em> cover.<\/p>\n

This dish towel is a\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0tiny token of our appreciation for being included in this warm family celebration of Thanksgiving.\u00c2\u00a0 My mother always taught me to never go empty handed.\u00c2\u00a0 This dishtowel will last longer than the pumpkin and\u00c2\u00a0mincemeat\u00c2\u00a0pies I will bring along as my contribution to the dinner.<\/p>\n

The embroidery design is from Dakota Collectibles<\/em> <\/a>Holidays & Seasons collection.\u00c2\u00a0 The shading on the pumpkin, the detail on the wheat and the\u00c2\u00a0way it\u00c2\u00a0stitched out so beautifully really pleased me–so much, in fact, that I embroidered a second towel as a hostess gift\u00c2\u00a0for Jane, a PlayGroup Mom<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0.\u00c2\u00a0 She is hosting our group for dinner at her home next week and\u00c2\u00a0will be the recipient of the second towel.<\/p>\n

The 18″ wide\u00c2\u00a0fabric is\u00c2\u00a0 made especially for dishtowels with selvages on each side.\u00c2\u00a0 Sold by the yard, the fabric features woven colored stripes.\u00c2\u00a0I’ve serged the\u00c2\u00a0ends and\u00c2\u00a0 then stitched a\u00c2\u00a0simple shirt tail hem. Voila!\u00c2\u00a0 A dishtowel!\u00c2\u00a0 The coarse linen fabric is very absorbent.\u00c2\u00a0 Years ago, I purchased several yards of\u00c2\u00a0 this toweling at JoAnn’s Fabrics in a variety of colors.\u00c2\u00a0 Now I can find it nowhere and wish I had bought more. It never had occurred to me that it would become unavailable. I’ve used a good bit of it but now I’m using it sparingly.<\/p>\n

In my humble opinion, a dishtowel is a great\u00c2\u00a0little gift, for a hostess or\u00c2\u00a0anyone you want to\u00c2\u00a0shower with a little special attention.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0A pretty towel is welcome in any home and it is not so large a gift that the recipient feels beholden.<\/p>\n

Aside from the pure joy of spending the day with Rebecca, Harvey, little Alastair and\u00c2\u00a0the fine,\u00c2\u00a0fun family\u00c2\u00a0from which our son-in-law comes,\u00c2\u00a0 Bob and I will be offering thanks for our many blessings.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 If I weren’t so busy making Christmas outfits, I’d make up a dozen of these for good friends and neighbors for whom I am grateful.<\/p>\n

Nana Fun:\u00c2\u00a0 A few days ago, while Robert and Laurel were here, their grandfather told Robert to do something.\u00c2\u00a0 Robert ignored him.\u00c2\u00a0 Bob repeated the request and then asked, “Do you understand me, Robert?”<\/p>\n

He replied, “No, Granddad.\u00c2\u00a0 I only speak China.”\u00c2\u00a0 Laurel, with big sister swagger and impatience, \u00c2\u00a0immediately corrected him, saying “It’s Chinese<\/strong>, Robert!\u00c2\u00a0 And you don’t speak that Chinese!\u00c2\u00a0 You speak English<\/strong>!”\u00c2\u00a0 Robert ignored her and complied with his grandfather’s request.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Shelly, the children’s mother, has started a Thankful Tree for the children.\u00c2\u00a0 She\u00c2\u00a0has drawn\u00c2\u00a0a large tree on poster board and each day the children attach a leaf, inscribed with something for which they are thankful.\u00c2\u00a0 Tonight, 5 year-old Robert, whose current consuming interests include mummies, Egypt and China,wrote on\u00c2\u00a0his leaf, ” I am thankful that I don’t live in China because I don’t know their words.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
