Independence Celebration Duds

July4LR

Making holiday outfits for the grandchildren is always fun.  They look forward to having special clothes and I look forward to seeing them wearing the things I have made.  Some holidays, such as Christmas and Easter,  require an investment of far more time and materials than this summer celebration of independence and Americana.  Right now, quick and easy is what I like.

Robert and Laurel are all set for this year’s festivities in  their matching shirts.  Alastair’s shirt has the same design.  If all three are  together for the Fourth, they will enjoy being part of a set.

When this ad ( outdated contact information has been removed) appeared in Creative Needle magazine in 1986,  I was smitten.

While placing my order, I spoke with Mary Wadsworth who had developed this unique product.  She shared some details of how these embroideries came to be.  All were made in China by ladies who were given 36″ squares of Swiss batiste.  These squares were marked off into 6″ sections, each embroidered with one of the patterns. The finished hand embroidered insertion was 6″ wide by 36″ long.

No edgings were ever posted.  But many patterns of the embroidered insertions were purchased and as more were released, I added them to my special treasure trove.  Now, they can be yours.

They were only available for a few years and now might be found on e-Bay or as old stock in heirloom shops.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Irish Crochet

Irish collar

A few posts ago, a reader commented that she would enjoy a post explaining  the difference between Irish crochet and regular, everyday crochet.

I’ve done very little crochet and have only token knowledge of the subject.  As I have declared time and time again, I am an expert only on the merits of my children and grandchildren.  But I am happy to share what I know and what I have discovered after doing a little research.  I was especially pleased to find the Irish crochet demonstration YouTube video posted below.

Irish crochet is made up of motifs, basted to waste fabric, connected with crochet stitches and then removed from the waste fabric.  This makes possible the dimensional motifs which are characteristic of Irish crochet.

Pictured below are three pieces from my collection in the very popular shamrocks and roses pattern.

These, obviously, are all edgings.   The first piece is 4 yds. long, with a definite curve.  I suspect it edged a tablecloth.

This  Swiss organdy was purchased 25 years ago in Chicago at an upscale “yard goods” store that was going out of business. There is some discoloration at the selvage edges. The 36″ fabric is very fine.$8 per yard for royal navy, mint, kelly green or seafoam.
The mint organdy was used to line the antique lace bonnet featured in this post.

Stamps~Re-post

Laurel in stamps dress, Robert in rocket shirt. He thinks he got the better deal. A strip of that skirt fancyband ribbon, measuring the exact width of the armhole, has been stitched down at either end of the casing. The ribbon is simply whipped with thread in the center and tacked through the elastic and casing. This gives the illusion of a bow.

Aw, shucks, Laurel!

“Stamps” are quick and easy machine embroidery embellishments for anything from baby knits to adult clothing.  Somehow, photos of my “stamped” pink onesie and hat have disappeared.  But you can trust me when I tell you it was very, very cute.  And quick and easy.

Make a Girl’s Pouch Purse

purseLll2

When Laurel and Robert arrived for a two day visit,  my little granddaughter was wearing the ladybug dress I made recently. While she was here, we made a matching “purse.”

This  is a nice little sewing project for a child, as the purse foundation can be a ready made handkerchief requiring just 4 lines of straight stitch to be finished.   Or it can be more elaborate, like a square with lace edging or bias binding and machine embroidery.  Note:  I attached the bias binding but Laurel did  the remainder of the sewing.

Regardless of your choice, you begin with a finished square.  Large squares make large purses, smaller squares make smaller purses.  Nothing tricky here. Continue reading

Old is Better than New

kids-dolls-wash-day

Sometimes, old is better than new. In my opinion, that is the case when it comes to irons–no Black and Decker or Rowenta can compare to my fabulous, absolutely-cannot-sew-without General Mills/Betty Crocker/Tru Heat beauty.

ironallflat

In 1946, these were made by General Mills, promoted by Betty Crocker and named Tru Heat. But why does this iron out perform all the others? Continue reading
