Grandchildren’s Bedroom Redo

My cup runneth over with grandchildren.  Whew!  It has been non-stop fun here at Nana’s house for the past 10 days. Granddad and I have read stories, said prayers and tucked in one, two, or all three grandchildren every  night before and after some exciting events (Halloween, county fair, Gator football game and more).

That’s why there has been no time for blogging.  Of course, I’d rather spend time with these precious children than blog, but I hope to be more regular from now on.

2 beds

I’ll prattle on and on about these fun happenings in the next post.  For now,  in order to get back on track to the topic of sewing, I will show pictures of the big kids’ bedroom redecorating, though it is not yet done.  Because the room is shared by both Robert and Laurel, it couldn’t be too frilly or too masculine.  Another consideration is that we often use it for guests.

Alastair, 3 1/2, has for some time now slept in a big bed at home.  But he has never wanted to sleep anywhere other than the crib here at Nana’s house.  So he is still in the nursery, which adjoins the big kids’ room.  I hope when his baby sister arrives, he will willingly abandon the crib and bunk in this room near his cousins on a trundle.

When this redecorating project was started, I really wanted to keep the rug and use these quilts.  Lightweight denim seemed like a good choice for the bed skirts and valances.  I used the strip/safety pin technique discussed in the earlier post, Ho-hum Sewing. An eyelet ruffle peeks out from below the valances for a touch of femininity.

The window shades were in good shape except for the scraggly fringe (see sepia photo below).  That fringe was removed and replaced with domestic eyelet galloon which was stitched in place.

The neutral fabric lampshades were replaced with quick, elasticized tubes of red gingham.   Big 12-15″ craft shop letters (A R and L) were painted red and will hang on the wall with some art work when I get around to that.

Except for the letters and the denim, everything else was plundered from my stash.  A few more yards of this and that are gone!  Hurrah!

The room is neither exciting nor to-die-for, but it is an improvement over the plain Jane fix the room received after a hurricane did some serious damage and took the roof off 8 years ago, just after Laurel’s birth.  just 6 weeks before Rebecca’a at-home wedding, the roof and walls were replaced and the wood floors were refinished.

But her childhood bedroom has been almost barren since then. So  this redo is a welcome, if not complete, improvement.

I hope you will check back in a day or two to find out about Halloween, the county fair and Robert’s trip with us to The Swamp for the Florida Gators vs. Missouri football game.~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nana Fun

How precious is this?  It brought a tear to my eye.  Laurel and Robert’s cousin  Mikey was born with several serious heart defects.  His first open heart surgery was performed just 6 weeks after he was born.  In the 6 years since his birth, there have been many others.  Today, eight year-old Laurel’s mother found this letter tucked in the mail box.

L to Santa re Mikey
